MARKET FOR MEAT AND BODY PARTS 

Macaques and other primates are hunted throughout Asia, though there are also large parts of the population that do not hunt or consume monkey meat. In some cases, macaques are traditionally hunted for subsistence. In others, the trade in macaque meat is a more recent, luxury phenomenon. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and in other Asian folk medicine traditions, monkey body parts are attributed with medicinal properties. Macaque parts are also used as ritual items in some cultures.

Whatever the reason that they are hunted, the market for meat and body parts can result in welfare issues because of hunting and trapping methods, the disruption of social groups or conditions during transport and in markets. The hunting of macaques contributes to the primate pet trade, as live infants are often sold when their mothers are killed for their meat. It contributes to conservation issues, as the species of macaques that are hunted are usually internationally protected due to the threats they face. It is also often illegal, though there are sometimes exceptions made for indigenous people and traditional hunting methods.
